Verizon FIOS - Customer Experience Review

Monday, 17 November 2008 15:42 by admin

As we all know, FiOS works on an underlying fiber-optic network.

What does fiber-optics enable?

It enables all your TV signals, internet data (emails, online videos) to travel at the speed-of-light!

This is definetely an amazing technology which will change all of over past experience with TV, Internet and telephone over the next few years.

This extremely high-speed network comes right into your home (yes, in your bedroom) and replaces the old copper or coaxial wire technology.

FiOS's speeds are faster than cable. FiOS Internet is faster than DSL etc etc...

Quick Check: Can you get FiOS TV?

What are the advantages?

  • High-Definition TV channels
  • High speed internet (up to 20Mbps -vow!- download speed)
  • Digital Phone with calling features managed from internet and PC as well as the phone itself.

How does customer experience change?

Verizon uses the already installed ONT (Optical Network Terminal) at your home and provides a set-top-box to receive over 245+ digital TV channels. All channels are digital! Plus there is access to more than 25 HD channels (will be 100 by end of the year) and over 11 000 On Demand (VOD) programs.

Verizon will provide a wireless router at no charge when a customer places an order. So no more purchasing of additional equipment and no more additional costs.

IMG (Interactive Media Guide) provides all kind of channel information, timings etc. Check out the IPG 2.0 video below:

Widgets on the TV screen provide local traffic info, daily horoscopes and many useful information of your choice. Isn't that interesting?

Schedule and record your favorite shows using DVR if you can not be home or have a meeting.

Use Multi-Room Digital Video Recorder (MRDVR) and connect Verizon FiOS to multiple rooms.

Want to record two shows at the same time? Choose a Dual-Tuner box.

Use Media Manager to organize all of your media; that is, photos, music and videos.

Allow your desktop computer to connect to your FiOS TV and view slide shows of your photos, all video archive and all music files from your computer.

Why Dish Network for TV Service?

Saturday, 14 June 2008 12:40 by admin

Of course there is not a certain answer why to choose satellite based TV services over the other cable and emerging fiber optic solutions. However, we will give it a best shot to highlight what advantages Dish Network has to offer.

First of all, Dish Network provides the TV service using the satellite signals, just like the GPS systems we have in our cars to find our location. The broadcast is received using the dish antenna direct from the satellite. That's why the broadcast is available almost at any location. This is the first advantage.

Second, the broadcast type is 100 % digital. So even the minimum level of quality is very good. How? I'll explain them later in this article.

Third, if you need to relocate, then you can carry your equipment and be able to watch channels exclusive to Dish Network at your new place.

The good thing about using satellite receivers is that there is a wide variety of channels available. This means that while we can watch only about 90 channels using cable TV service, we can watch more than 300 channels by subscribing to Dish Network or other satellite TV providers. There are international channels available as well!.. Smile

Similarly, pay per view movies and events are limited to around 40 for a cable TV service but Dish Network has approximately 80 pay per view channels available.

The packages at Dish Network starts from $19.99. Have you heard about such a price from Time Warner or Verizon??

I kept the best thing about Dish Network to the end, which is... NBA League Pass to watch all NBA games, NHL on the Ice to watch all hockey games and ESPN Gameday to watch all College Football and Basketball games. Good deal for the fans!

About the 100% digital channels: Now, a lot of the air channels and cable channels are based on analog broadcast. However, by February 2009, just 10 months from now, there will be no more analog broadcasting and all channels will be digital (by federal law). The problem is that not everybody has digital TV sets yet. Since previous televisions that we've used are not compatible with the digital broadcasting we will need to buy new TVs and spend a lot of extra money. For those who want to keep their existing TVs, there is a cheaper solution around this, which is to buy a small digital to analog converter to use with their existing televisions. However if you already have or if you order Dish Network service then you won't have to buy a new TV or buy any equipment. You won't have to think about this transition if you have Dish Network. Basically, there are two quality levels for digital broadcasting. One is SD (Standard Definition) and the second one is HD (High Definition). Of these, SD has the minimum quality, but even this minimum quality provides great picture and great digital sound.

Last couple of Dish Network offerings is that they are now doing FREE Installation as early as 24 hours, providing FREE DVR (Digital Video Recorder) upgrade so that you may record your favorite TV shows and playback again. Also you are eligible for a FREE HDTV upgrade to watch High-Definition channels and FREE Home Theater System or airline ticket (a $100 value). And... You don't want to say "NO" for a 3 months of FREE service , do you?! (limited time offer).

Even cable or other TV providers might have their own advantages but I've tried to highlight the advantages of subscribing to Dish Network in this article. Please share the best things you like about your current TV provider in the Comments section. Thank you!

Please allow me to explain how Verizon FiOS technology makes the difference. FiOS is a Fiber-Optic technology which uses the light to bring the TV and the internet service to the home. This is called Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP). Since speed-of-light is much faster than the speed of transmission through electrical wires, it is possible to achieve higher internet, TV and voice quality. One nice example of this comes to our daily life as a completely new TV experience: Let's consider the TV Channels Menu which pops up on the TV screen when we press the remote button. Isn't this menu full of text which makes us to read the text in order to choose the channel? FiOS brings icons to this menu; just beside the name of the TV channel we can see the channel's emblem. This way we can find our favorites in the menu in a flash. This menu is center-focused so just focus on the center of the TV screen and scroll the channels. Isn't this good? Of course this example was just a small tiny advantage of FiOS. Additionally the daily programs and program times are colorfully segregated based on genre (sports, news etc.). Verizon engineers have introduced Widgets to the TV community; so local traffic, weather info (and more widgets) are available right on your TV screen. Video-On-Demand (VOD) feature is introduced and enhanced so that we can choose from the thousands of available titles and watch a movie so easily. Or would you still choose to go out and rent a DVD?? :) So, if you like to be one of the first persons or families who want to experience these and many more features namely Mercury IMG and also want a FREE HDTV, click here to go to Verizon's official site to order your service online!  Verizon FiOS Bundle FREE 19" LCD HDTV!

High-Definition TV (HDTV) - Buying Guide

Friday, 14 December 2007 15:20 by admin
Buying an HDTV might not be an easy decision to make for some.

First thing to decide is the size of the screen, right?

My suggestion is; either think SMALL or think BIG!

Means, either get a small screen or get a large screen size HDTV. Don't choose something in between to fully enjoy your new investment!

Make sure to check which TV services are available in your area. Most TV companies are offering HD channels.

In some cases, your area might not be covered by any cable service providers. Or similarly, you may not be happy with your cable provider maybe looking for another solution for your TV needs. No problem! Satellite technology covers every single spot in the world, right?
